Julep Maven September Box (plus free add on)

Julep Maven, I love you. So, I figured I should probably review my September Julep Maven box before I receive my October one. In my box I got a closer-to-turquoise green called Popova and a beautiful dark royal blue called Gunta. Both go on with the same thickness as the first two I received. I also got a lengthening mascara in brown, which is rubber bristled and double sided. One side has the applicator and the other side is a brush, to brush out any clumping. I love it! I just wish it had been in black. It’s nice for a bare-faced kind of day though.

I did get a free add on, though I’m not sure why. It’s called Alma, and though it looks like a bright yellow, when you get it, it is actually more of a mustard yellow, almost Dijon. I don’t love the yellow but I have used it as an accent over another colour, so that’s alright. I’m super excited to receive my October box and I still think every girl who loves polish needs to get these boxes!!!!

L’Oreal Voluminous Power 24HR Mascara

Mascara. The product I would take with me to a deserted island. I love big, dramatic, thick black lashes. I was a bit weary about this product but a coworker had told me about how much she loves Voluminous Million Lashes. So even though I didn’t go with the exact one she recommended I stayed in the Voluminous family. I was weary about this product for only one reason, I hate plastic bristled brushes. You know what I’m talking about? Years ago CoverGirl had come out with a plastic bristled brush and I jumped on it. It almost nearly pulled my lashes out! Ever since then I’ve been staying away from such products – which is turning out to be harder and harder every day as every mascara brush seems to be going in that direction. Anyway. Regardless of the brush I bought it. I actually really enjoy the brush! It’s a thick, full brush that deposits (in my choice) black colour evenly. I do feel like it adds some volume to my lashes and gives it a bit of drama. The only thing I don’t like, which I’ve never had an issue with other mascara’s, is that it takes awhile to dry. It’s not a deal breaker I’m just not used to it. And lastly, I don’t know why they feel the need to put “24hr” in their title, I’ve never had an issue with my mascara all of a sudden disappearing after 5 hours……do you? If you’re looking for a decently priced mascara that will fill out your lashes nicely, at $11.99 this is a great buy!

Vichy Lip Protection Stick SPF 20

I know summer is coming to an end, but for me (and for everyone, really) SPF is still a must. I won’t go into the differences and effects of UVA, UVB and UVC because I’m sure you’ve heard enough for one year, but I will tell you about this fantastic lip protection stick I can’t stop buying. I have terrible lips. Dry, flaky and if the sun even touches them, burnt. I’ve tried a lot of SPF lip balms/sticks, but none of them have done their job as well as Vichy. The tube comes in at about $14 which makes it on the mid to higher end of lip care, but I find it worth it. It has UVA and UVB protection as well as being sensitive enough that if you suffer from cold sores, this won’t irritate them. Hypoallergenic, paraben free, preservative free and water resistant. It really is water resistant. I went away for a few days camping this summer and spent a lot of time in the water, reapplying was not a concern. Not only is it all of those things but if you also suffer from what I suffer from, the dry, flakiness, the stick is very nourishing. You can feel it hydrating your lips with just one coat. My only dislike with this product, and it’s not even that big of a deal for me, is that it uses the mineral sun blocker, Titanium Dioxide. Titanium Dioxide is known for leaving that white film in sunscreen. Is it really noticeable in this product? Not really. I find it actually just bring out the natural colour of my lips a bit more. I have worn lipsticks and coloured glosses over it as well and it’s been fine. If you absolutely hate the idea of Titanium Dioxide, then I would find another product.

Sephora Colourful Blush in Rose Petal

I don’t have as many blushes as I would like to. But I got this blush as a sample and it’s taken me a while to try it, so finally today, I tried it. Sephora Colourful blushes come in 2 finishes, matte and shimmer. The one I tried, Rose Petal – is a nice matte pink. It was actually way more pigmented then I thought it was going to be. A little goes a long way. What I found really impressive about this product is it’s longevity! I put it on at 7am, I just removed my make up now (7pm), and it was still going strong. 12 hours, not too shabby. It claims to hydrate, but I honestly didn’t feel any difference between regular ol’ blush and this one. It is non-comedogenic and paraben free. For $15 I think this is a nice blush to add to your collection. There was no wow factor, but for every day use, especially on those long days, it’s great.

Benefit – Girl Meets Pearl

Let’s pretend that you have super fair skin, no glow, no dewiness, no…..oh how depressing. You’re me! I have the most lifeless looking skin, ever. Seriously. Enter the “light” of my life (I’m hilarious), Girl Meets Pearl. It claims to be golden pink but I believe it to just be pearly pink. Whichever way you see it, it’s a wonderful, shiny, soft fluid that blends in smoothly. If you find you have a bit of dull looking skin (which I get in the fall to winter seasons), and you’d like to spruce up that face a bit, this could be your answer. There are two ways you could put this on. Right after you’ve applied your make up, tap onto the top of your cheek bones, cupid’s bow, wherever you would like to see a hint of glow. OR, I prefer to dab blobs of it all over my face and then mix it in while putting on my foundation, achieving an all over glowing look.  If you have oily skin like I do in the summers, you don’t really need this. It will probably make you look a lot oilier. I would use this as your fall/winter secret weapon.

I don’t have a very good camera or any type of video taping equipment (maybe one day) to show you how I apply this, so I’m going to link you a video from Benefit’s website on how you can use this product. I hope it helps!

Finding Mr. Bright

MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator

So I never actually bought this product. One day while picking up some MAC products, the kind make-up artist gave me a handful of this Volcanic Ash Exfoliator (in cute little tubs of course). Right away I love that it’s charcoal black in colour. How fun is that? This fills me with excitement even up until I get home, open up the pot and use it for the first time. My opinion of this product does not change from the first time I used it, to the 10th time I used it. The texture of this product is like a gel with very tiny exfoliating beads in it. Almost as tiny as you would find in a product for micro-dermabrasion. It almost looks like caviar a bit….yea, caviar! Anyway, once you place it on your face and start rubbing it around in a circular motion, it turns a bit grey and has a slight foam to it. The texture to me personally felt a bit like rubbing pop rocks on your skin. Not that I’ve ever rubbed pop rocks on my skin. There are enough beads that when you’re rubbing you can feel them all over and not just here and there – which I love. It definitely leaves my face feeling squeaky clean. Once it’s been washed off my skin, my skin did not feel tight or dry. And though it claims to add moisture I didn’t feel like my skin was overly moisturized either. I also did not feel like there was a left over residue. I did only use this product – like I said, around 10 times and I didn’t notice anything amazing resulting from using this exfoliator. Maybe if I had used it more? I can’t answer that obviously, but it was a very nice experience over all. Would I pay $33.50 for it? Possibly, depending on what kind of spending day you catch me on, but I’m not rushing out to get it. I can however see someone falling in love with it, I would understand. It deserves at least a try.

Julep Maven – Toni and Sasha Introductory Box

I know, it’s been almost 1 whole month since I’ve done an entry. I apologize! Life has kind of been changing for me. I joined a gym and tried hot yoga for the first time, yowza! I also got a new job where I will be your wonderful specialist on skincare brands such as Tanda, StriVectin and Skyn Iceland as of October 1st! Yay!!! So, I have tons of things to blog about, but let’s just start slowly here. I started the Julep Maven monthly boxes and couldn’t love them more. I will show you what I got as my “Introduction” set.

So this was my personal Introductory Box. There are 5 Style Profiles which are American Beauty, Boho Glam, Bombshell, Classic with a Twist and It Girl. You take a very short “quiz” and the site determines which profile will fit you best. My results landed me in the Boho Glam category. Landing my Toni (purple) and Sasha (pinky-coral), as well as the Pedi Creme. What I love about The monthly boxes, is the fact that you have a window of time where you can see what you will be getting for the month and if you don’t like what your style has to offer, you can change it to a different style! You only have about 4 days to do so, though. You can also either skip it for that month or send it to a friend. LOVE it.

Now, as for the polish themselves I really do enjoy it. It is a thicker polish, so if you get it right the first time you don’t need to apply another coat of colour. In saying this, I do find a lot comes out with the brush even when you try to remove the excess, so keep an eye on that. The pedi creme hasn’t wow’ed me but it does make my feet a bit softer. I think I would stick with some of my Gehwol products instead.

If you have $20 or so extra a month and you love polish, I think you would absolutely love this program. I look forward to every month. I have my September box and I will blog about that later. So give this a check!
